KHEL TOH HUMEIN KHELNE DO/A SHOT IN THE DARK
(bi-lingual feature film, Hindi/English)
‘a shot in the dark’ is another co-production of director Bidyut Kotoky and U.S. distributor, PPI Releasing.

Raj was just one of the many frustrated ex-terrorist from northeast India who has become dissolute with life and looked for his solace in the bottle. Things would have continued the same way had it not been for the school teacher Mr. Bhattacharya, who reignited a dream which Raj had long given up – that of having a world class football club…this time as a coach and organizer! And using his goodwill, Mr. Bhattacharya even managed to organize an exhibition match between one of the top football team of the region with their football club – ‘Rising Star’!

When Raj approached his ex-colleagues in their hid- out, they knew that he is struggling with finances to keep Rising Star afloat and will be forced to seek their help for a bail out. But there is this bizarre request: for self-styled ‘Major’ Joel, and cadet Raikom, to play for Rising Star in the exhibition match!! Raj is adamant -he had played & seen enough football in his life to know the capabilities of Joel, the centre forward & Raikom, the goal keeper.

The problem with fairy-tale is that it doesn’t last forever… In the exhibition match, Joel misses a golden opportunity to score the equalizer at the dying moment! As the final whistle is blown, Raj understood the bitter truth in a hard way – keeping your cool in a battle field with bullet chasing you all around to snatch your life is much different from keeping your cool in an actual pressure cooker situation of a football match, in front of a thousand cheering crowd …

Next day, after a long search, Mr Bhattacharya finds Raj sleeping outside the local wine brewing joint. But Raj’s hangover is taken care of by what he has to say. Rising Star XI lost the match alright, but the young team managed to win quite a few hearts – and they are invited to the neighbouring town as a wild card entrant to play in the qualifying tournament for the prestigious national league!!

Raj realise that this is the closet he could come to live his childhood hood dream…But can he go back to Joel & Raikom for two of the most crucial position of his team? Especially because the township where tournament is to be hosted falls under police officer Ranjit – his school mate, who is also responsible for the encounter deaths of many of Raj’s ex-colleagues …

Sanjeev is travelling with his park colleagues through the Kaziranga National Park when the rogue elephant Rani decides to give a chase… They are carrying fire arms, but Sanjeev can’t ever think of using guns against the very animal he is supposed to protect! They are lucky as, in the nick of time, they find a wooden bridge where they park their vehicle – a bridge which the angry elephant knows may be too unstable to hold her! From his elderly colleague Dhareshwar da Sanjeev comes to understand that as a baby elephant Rani saw her mother killed before her eyes by poachers, and since then she has hated human beings pathologically….

Yes, Sanjeev has been looking forward to his posting as a Divisional Forest Officer of the Kaziranga National Park and had expected the posting to have challenges – but he had no idea just how challenging it would be… There is a well-oiled poaching cartel working with the pride of Kaziranga and highly endangered, one horned rhinoceros as their target. Rhino horns price being higher than that of cocaine and gold in the black market, makes the cartel highly efficient and dangerous at the same time! Although it seems impossible to completely control these poachers on the local level, Sanjeev and his bunch of colleagues refuse to give up!

The local police inspector of the area, Ranjit - almost at the last run of his service life - deals more on the grey and corrupt front than of law. And his relationship with the upright Sanjeev is far from friendly. But as time goes by Sanjeev discovers another shade of Ranjit and that they shares common trait – a bitter hatred for the poachers. However, due to his own bad experiences with the authorities Ranjit doesn’t have much faith in the due process of law. He prefers to gun down the poachers in ‘encounters’ rather than arrest them. And Sanjeev’s insistence on doing everything by the book causes some ugly situations between them, even as both work toward the common goal of stopping the poachers…

In his crusade to save the wild-life, Sanjeev discovers that some local people are actually his allies – like the young girl Parul or the elderly tea planter Mr Hazarika. Just as he also discovers that appearances can be deceive - it is really difficult to separate friends from foes when it comes to battling a multi-million dollar black market of rhino horns…

And then there is Rani – the rogue elephant. For the people living in the periphery of Kaziranga, she is a terror, and they are after the forest department to gun her down. However, Sanjeev has a crazy idea - like trying to develop a friendship with the rampaging Rani…
